4th November 2021

Chris has been sort of expecting a call over the last month from our contractors to say that the Americans have bought up our timber, the French have plundered our glass, the Chinese haven’t released our steel etc, but that call didn’t come and arrangements for the frame to start going up on Monday were finalised. We’ve arranged for windows and doors and roofing to follow on in neat sequence so the house can be close to weather-tight by Christmas ….

Then today – you know what’s coming – BANG! “Sorry, but the steel suppliers have let us down and we’re delayed a couple of weeks”. We could believe this might happen but not at such short notice – clearly someone, somewhere in the supply chain knew about this weeks, not days ago (or should have) …

Anyway, the upshot from a round of phone calls is that with weekend working, and some flexibility given the long narrow shape of the house, (and fingers crossed), the frame installation is now going to start on 24th November and the roofing and window installation start dates are going to remain the same. It means we’ll have several contractors on site at the same time through December which may not be great. It was either that or delay the whole shebang until the New Year. Ho hum, who said it would be easy …

Today was 12 months since we left Wolferstan Barn, our warm, comfortable home of nearly 30 years, complete with roof, windows and doors … Was there a thought “have we made a dreadful mistake?” Yes, of course – but only for a second!
