Chris has prepared the buttresses on the west wall ahead of being repaired by Lee, removing invasive roots, loose bricks and the accumulated soil – this time without any accidents.

Our approach to the wall repairs is ’light-touch’, doing what’s necessary to make the wall robust and resistant to further damage from ivy, roots and water damage, but not replacing every broken or blown brick and certainly not attempting wholesale re-pointing. Our new bull-nose bricks from Norfolk – we couldn’t find them at reclamation yards in sufficient numbers – are pale but will do. We think it’s okay to ’tell the story’ of the restoration.

This evening’s Grand Design on Channel 4 featured a new build and bothy renovation in an established walled garden in Scotland. Some very interesting issues and challenges: old versus new, house versus garden, repair versus replacement etc. We hope our project will stand up to such scrutiny …

And in other construction news, the compost bins are finished. With design inspiration from Geoff Hamilton, Monty Don and Dick Strawbridge, we’re happy with the flexibility of these two bins – more to come! But not until next week as Chris is off with the Fat Blokes (fatter than Monty but thinner than Dick) for the weekend.
