9th September 2021

The transformed site has been silent again this week. It’s been super that Page and Mark, our groundworkers, achieved so much and it’s great when they’re here. However, we enjoy having the site back to ourselves and peaceful. We can plan what happens next and do our seemingly insignificant tasks, like moving materials, picking up stones and rubbish, and just stopping and staring, all of which seem a bit inappropriate when a couple of machines are going hell for leather around us!

Our focus has been back on the veg patch. We’ve chosen a place for some compost bins, identified our first stretches of formal yew hedges, and now have lots of surplus stone to spread around the raised beds. Another delivery of timber for the beds and the bins is definitely more expensive than before. The ‘Hobbit’ stove for the potting shed has arrived but there’s no one to install it ….

Work in progress (still). Imagine yew hedges and compost bins in the foreground
You need to zoom in, but look how pleased Bev is to have chosen the location for her Lutyens bench!

The man from MBC – our timber frame company – visited today. The good news is the foundations should be down during October and the frame up in November. To our surprise, there wasn’t any bad news! Maybe next time …

Village life continues to be a joy, with lots of invitations and gifts of vegetables, eggs and honey. We won the village lottery for last month but Chris was in deep disgrace one day last week when he forgot to open the village shop: late newspapers and croissants for East Knoyle that day!

Happy birthday to Chris’ mum!

  1. I know it is only my sense of humour but how I laughed 😂😂😂when I read that you forgot to open the village shop hilarious, reminds me of the time you forgot to turn up for Sunday roast.
