Derek and Luke of Horton Demolition started preparing the bungalow for demolition yesterday by stripping out the inside. While we have no affection for the place, it is sad to see a (presumably) once-loved home stripped bare. It would have been quite a nice place in its 1980 heyday!

It was an early start this morning as today is the day for the tiles and felt to be removed – all in accordance with our Natural England bat licence. Our ecologist, Georgie, checked for any bats over-nighting or hibernating – there were none – before the Horton demolition boys could begin the removal, working from a forklift cage and all under Georgie’s watchful eye. The tiles came off first, each one checked for a dozing bat:

And then the felt came off:

Chris is sad that it wasn’t possible for him and his Exeter gang of pals to tackle the demolition, or at least some of it, but their approach would undoubtedly have fallen way short of the exacting standards on view today, especially the health and safety!

So that’s it, no bats in evidence, all bat-related regulations complied with, and now a building that no self-respecting bat would be seen dead in …
