6th January 2021

Dave has finished the gates for the western gate. They look beautiful but won’t be hung for a while. They need hinges and ironmongery from the village blacksmith.

We’re now in a fresh lockdown and we’re wondering what this will mean for availability of tradesmen, getting supplies and the lead-times for the main house contracts like the timber frame and the windows. To ensure that we’re never at a loose end over the next month or two – and because Matt ‘the Fence’ has damaged his back – we’ve decided that we’ll tackle the 40 metres of new fencing around the ‘missing corner’ of the garden that belongs to our neighbours. Matt’s back should be better in time for him to come and correct what we’ve done …

Depressingly we’ve just read in the local paper that a large bronze statue of a cow’s head has been stolen from a garden in East Knoyle. It backs up the advice from our garden designer, Svend, to use fibre-glass if we’re tempted to have any big ornaments in the garden. (To be clear, Matt ‘the Fence’ denies all knowledge of the disappearance!)

Keep an eye open for this cow!

  1. Happy New Year to you both and let’s hope the current temperature is a low point. Re the calor gas monitoring, I am assuming you know the trick of pouring warm water on the outside and when you touch the bottle, the remaining gas will make that part of the bottle cold.
If I know you almost certainly will. Not a technological solution but heh ho.
