The whole footprint has now been excavated to the right level, including the garage which has to be 100mm lower than the rest of the building. We’ve brought in 200 tonnes of ‘type 1’ stone but somehow need a load more. Chris must have got his maths, stone density or compaction rates wrong!

Until the end, Page kept digging up hardstandings and lumps of concrete. We assume these date from the erection of poultry sheds after the war, and some appeared in their original position and others must have been buried when the bungalow was built. Apart from some land drains we’re fortunate and relieved not to have dug up anything more problematic.

Page and Mark will be with us for another week, spreading and compacting the stone, and getting the site ready for the main event – shame it won’t start until October …
