On Monday we had the largest number of workers on site so far as several teams arrived from Scottish and Southern’s contractor to start tackling the electricity cables. The parking was sufficient and the ‘welfare facilities’ coped admirably which was a relief …

The different teams had their own tasks – laying a new cable through the trench, erecting a replacement pole and installing new stays to hold up existing and new poles. They took charge of the site and all went well, with some of them back on Thursday for the ‘switch-over’ and removal of overhead cables and poles. Most of the village will lose power for some of the day and our neighbours have worked out we’re responsible. We’ve been changing the subject a lot!

Before the new cable is ‘wired up’ it has to be covered with sand – which has been our job. We hadn’t realised this had to be done so soon so there was an almighty panic on our part to order sand – how much do you need?! – and get shovelling by dawn. Job done by lunchtime (and with sand left over!)
